This has gone on long enough. The Saints say they don't want Drew Brees leaving after this season. He says he wants to finish  his career in Black & Gold with Sean Payton as his coach. When the team extended coach Payton through 2020, I anticipated a deal of similar duration with Brees was soon to follow. Many of us have read recent articles indicating there have been no negotiations for three months. That's not entirely shocking. An offer was reportedly made, then countered. With free agency, the draft & the entire summer ahead, there was no urgency. As I write this, it's August 2nd. Opening day is 5 weeks away. The future Hall of Fame quarterback says there will be no contract talks once the season is underway. What's the holdup? Unofficial reports say guaranteed money is the sticking point. No official source has confirmed, or denied that. Frankly, I like the fact that nobody's airing dirty laundry here. If they don't get a deal done before September 11th, Brees becomes an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. That leaves the Saints 2 options, match another team's offer or use the Franchise tag. If they do that, they'll have to pay him $43 million in 2017. I don't care that he'll be 38 in January. Brees keeps in shape year 'round. In ten seasons with the Saints, he's missed one game. By the way, Brett Favre played 'til age 41. Warren Moon & Vinny Testaverde both played 'til they were 44. It's time to "git 'er done"!
