More than 480,000 Americans die from illnesses caused by cigarette smoking every year. It's an established medical fact that smoking causes cancer, emphysema, and heart disease. My father died of emphyzema in 2001. I come from a family with a horrific history of various cancers, and both of my children smoke.

Tobacco products come with warning labels, yet millions of people ignore them. In Mexico, public health officials take a different approach. Instead of appealing to people's concern for long term health, they publish a warning that appeals to machismo. A friend recently returned from Mexico, and showed me the cigarette pack pictured above.
