Lafayette Mayor-President Joel Robideaux has appointed Interim Lafayette Police Chief Reginald Thomas as deputy police chief on a temporary basis.

In a statement from City Hall, Robideaux said he is making the provisional appointment in advance of announcing Lafayette’s new Chief of Police.

“I thank Reggie for his excellent work as Interim Chief of Police,” said Robideaux. “The Department has made significant strides in addressing violent crime and rebuilding relationships with the community during his tenure,” Robideaux said. “As we transition to a new Chief of Police, I feel it’s important to have a strong, experienced leader in the Deputy Chief position. Reggie is the best person to fill that role.”

Thomas, and any other candidates for the deputy chief position, will be subject to testing and a selection process, as required by law.

Thomas does not have the educational qualifications to serve as Lafayette's police chief, which is why Robideaux created the deputy chief position when he took office earlier this year.

An announcement as to who Robideaux has selected to serve as full-time police chief is expected in the coming days.
