In Lafayette, there is a safe place for people to get off of the streets in case they do not have a place to stay at night.

Dozens of people in Lafayette have been kept safe not only from the elements, but from violence, theft and general harassment on the streets.

Director of Executive Services for Catholic Charities of Acadiana, Ben Broussard, says they have been operating a low barrier shelter since March of this year as part of their work in the community to help those that need help.

Sheltering operations help the most vulnerable in our community, and he adds,

"Every night that someone is forced to sleep on the streets of our community and faces the elements is an emergency that requires a response. We consider inclement weather to be only one of the elements people living on the street experience."

Catholic Charities of Acadiana helps about 100 people each night.

When you click on the link above, there is plenty of information about how you can help. There is even a link to an Amazon Wish List, if you so choose to donate that way.

** Please remember for this, any items you choose to donate need to be new. They do not have to be the brands specified in the Amazon list, but they do need to be new.
