For some U.S. military veterans who return stateside, traunatic injuries are not always ones that you can see.

Post-traumatic stress syndrome, traumatic brain injuries and psychological stressors can seriously hinder a veteran's ability to return to a functional life.

That's where one Atlanta-based organization (that has Acadiana ties) has helped provide injured veterans with a canine companion who, in many cases, has saved the life of their human commission.

Healing 4 Heroes founder Piper Hill, an injured veteran herself, joined Bernie on Acadiana's Morning News today to promote the program that provides service dogs to veterans with cognitive disabilities.

According to the Healing4Heroes Web site, service dogs are able to assist a veteran with anxiety, depression, anger, reminding to take medication, posting, sweeping an area, waking from nightmares, and other needs. The dogs are trained to perform tasks for their handler, and serve as a distraction when the veteran requires the intervention.

Hill says of all the veterans who are served by Healing 4 Heroes, more than half come from South Louisiana.

Jill is also involved in a very exciting contest that will honor one deserving veteran with a NASCAR Fan's dream.

The "2016 Crown Royal Presents the “Your Hero’s Name Here” 400 at the Brickyard" will name the July 24th NASCAR race after the winner of the contest.

Hill is one of only five veterans who have been chosen for their outstanding dedication to community service following their career in the U.S. military.

At the Healing4Heroes Web site, you can also learn how to volunteer or donate funds to assist the program in reaching our nation's injured veterans.

Also, Hill said, there are resources, such as veteran applications and FAQs, that interested veterans can use to learn about the program.
