Is Eric Clapton the greatest guitarist ever? I don't know, but he's my favorite. He's probably won the most awards. Rolling Stone ranked him #2 all time, behind only the late Jimi Hendrix.  I've been a fan since I was a kid. He's the only person who's been inducted into the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame three times. His work with the Yardbirds, Cream, and his solo career have earned him the triple honor. By the early 1990's his work had appeared on more than 300 albums. He's won 17 Grammy awards.
When I first heard "Sunshine of Your Love," I was hooked. My all time favorite is "Layla." I've made several road trips over the years to see him perform, once flying from Lafayette, La. to New York City to see him at Madison Square Garden on my birthday.
He announced last year, he'd quit touring when he turns 70. I attended his concert in New Orleans last March, thinking it might be my last one. Today is Eric's 69th birthday. He's scheduled to perform at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival next month. My last chance?...
