There is a mixed blessing when we discuss low gas prices in Louisiana. While those of us that have to drive cars, pay for gas, put food on the table, and make a living appreciate  the price break we know there is another cost.

That cost is reflected in many friends and neighbors working reduced hours, getting furloughed, or even being dismissed from high paying jobs in the oilfield.

The current situation regarding the price of oil is not really responsible for this slight up tick in gas prices across the state. According to the American Automobile Association the slight rise in price is more of a seasonal thing than an economic thing.

Baring anything dramatic happening to the supply we’re not expecting a huge spike in prices. There might be a little upturn as we get over the hump but as we get into November, December we can expect those prices to come down.

Those are the words of Donald Redman a fuel analyst for Triple-A as reported by the Louisiana Radio Network. Redman explained that during the fall refineries are required to switch to a winter blend of gasoline for cold weather driving and that usually results in a ripple effect in the price of fuel.

That’s typical for this time of the year and sometimes as we get into October we see a little uptick in prices but usually it settles back down by November.

Could there be higher fuel prices for later in the year? According to Redman the price of gas and the price of oil are not expected to see major changes over the next couple of months. Redman did say that prediction goes out the window if world events create changes in the market or fear in investors.

Our fuel prices are driven by the news of the day so if things suddenly escalate or spiral out of control in the Middle East, we could see an uptick in prices.

The current average price across the state for a gallon of regular gas is $2.03. In Lafayette the lowest price we found was $1.88. In Crowley the lowest price was $1.95, Jennings had a low price of $1.88 and Lake Charles least expensive gas was priced at $1.88 as well.
