News just being released this afternoon that Former Governor Kathleen Blanco has been diagnosed with a rare form of eye cancer.

Blanco's spokeswoman, Marie Centanni, says the prognosis for the former Louisiana Democratic governor is good. Centanni says the cancer, choroidal melanoma, was discovered during an eye exam Blanco had last week. The diagnosis was confirmed by medical cancer specialists.

About 6-in-1-million people have been diagnosed with this form of cancer, according to Centanni. Blanco has been busy working on her autobiography. Updates on the former governor's condition will be posted online here.

Kathleen Blanco served as Governor of Louisiana from 2004 – 2008. She was the first woman to hold the post in Louisiana history. Blanco received strong criticism about her performance during Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath in 2005.
