$1,957,953.00 in emergency funding for the Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) has been allocated to seven Louisiana parishes.

"The Emergency Food and Shelter Program provides emergency funding to communities across the country to support the hungry and homeless," says a press release from Congressman Charles Boustany. "Funds are used to supplement food, shelter, rent, mortgage, and utility assistance programs for people with non-disaster related emergencies. EFSP funds are appropriated based on population, employment, and poverty levels in each state."

Here's the breakdown of the funding:

  • Acadia Parish – $28,677
  • Calcasieu Parish – $95,098
  • Iberia Parish – $39,970
  • Jefferson Davis Parish – $14,379
  • Lafayette Parish – $110,079
  • St. Martin Parish – $26,305
  • St. Mary Parish – $30,107

"We don’t have to wait for a hurricane to help those in need," says Boustany. "As a nation of compassionate people, we help our fellow neighbors when they fall upon hard times. This funding will provide valuable assistance for those in Louisiana who need it most.”
