17-year-old Brandon Viator of Opelousas is dead after getting hit by a driver while walking on LA 104 Friday night.

State Police spokesman Master Trooper Brooks David says the incident happened near St. James Avenue between 100 and 11 p.m. Trooper David says Viator was walking west on LA 104 near the right shoulder and was struck by 41-year-old Bryant Joubert of Blanks, who was driving a Dodge Ram. Viator died at the scene.
Joubert, who voluntarily submitted to a chemical test and was found not to be impaired, was wearing a set belt and was not injured.
"Troopers urge pedestrians to maintain a heightened level of awareness while walking near the road," says Trooper David. "Simple precautions such as wearing reflective materials, avoiding distractions, and walking a safe distance from travel lanes while facing oncoming traffic could help prevent many pedestrian related crashes.
State Police continue to investigate.
