An Erath man is behind bars for stealing five head of cattle and selling them at auction.

Our news partner KATC reported 18-year-old Jodi M. Richard, of Erath, was arrested Tuesday and booked into the Vermilion parish jail on theft charges for stealing seven heifers from a Vermilion parish pasture.

Investigators with the Department of Agriculture and Forestry said the Vermilion Parish cattleman reported the theft of seven heifers to the Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Office.

The livestock, all bearing the cattleman's brand, were found to be sold at auction at a Louisiana stockyard. Two of the heifers were shipped out of state. The value of the seven heifers totaled more than $13,000 at auction.

Richard faces up to 10 years in prison and up to $10,000 in fines.
