Elijah McGuire isn't taking his talents to the NFL yet, but he is taking them to the Ragin' Cajuns Men's Basketball team.

This is not an extravagant, early, April Fool's joke. After recently announcing he will stay and play his senior season for Ragin' Cajun football, he drops this massive surprise on Cajun Nation. Even more interesting to note, he will join the team immediately.

It's safe to say, Head Basketball Coach Bob Marlin is happy to have an athlete like "The Prophet" joining his squad.

"We’re excited to have Eli join our basketball team,” Marlin said. “He has a tremendous passion for both sports and this (playing basketball) has been something that he has wanted to do since he first enrolled at UL (in 2013). This is his first opportunity to join our program and we’re anxious to see what he can do.”

McGuire played basketball and football at Vandebilt Catholic high school, but it's not very often you see a player split time at the Division I level. It's even rarer to see a guy with a legit shot at the NFL decided to pick up another sport right before his senior season.

On the football field, he's a major asset that must be protected. With over 2,300 rushing yards and 750 receiving, plus 32 total touchdowns over the last two seasons, McGuire is the backbone of the Cajun offense.

Is Mark Hudspeth comfortable with his crown jewel competing in another sport? With the increased possibility for injury, it is a legitimate question.

"Eli loves to compete, loves this university and feels like he can be an asset to the men’s basketball program," Hudspeth said. "If this will help our men’s basketball program with their continued success as they compete for a Sun Belt Conference title, then Eli and our basketball program has our full support."

Coach Marlin said Hudspeth was a team player throughout the whole process. Marlin even told Hud early in Eli's career that if he redshirted him, he was going to play basketball. This might have been a surprise to Cajun Nation and Coach Hud, but not to Coach Marlin.

"He's one of the best, if not the best, athletes on this campus," Marlin said. "If he can help us cut down the nets, that would be great."

Why stop there, Eli? Why not just go ahead and pinch hit for the baseball team, do the triple jump in track and help coach the volleyball team?

Typically, McGuire fakes out opposing defenses. He threw all of Cajun Nation a serious stanky leg with this move.
