Duson residents Maka Borja & Jillian LeBlanc have been together since November of last year and shared the fun and unique story of their engagement with me.

When Maka decided it was time to propose to Jillian, he recalled that she told him how much she loved donuts when they began getting to know one another. "She found a random picture of a half dozen donuts on the Internet and it read 'will you be my girlfriend?’ and posted it on facebook, telling Maka he should use donuts if he ever wanted to ask her out. Every time the two had a donut together, she would say something along the lines of ‘You didn't even ask me out with donuts’ as a funny inside joke. So after making the mistake of NOT asking her to be his girlfriend with donuts, he decided to ask her to be his wife, WITH donuts. He visited Cajun Market Donut Company and met Stena who was delighted to create the special box filled with rings of dough, AND an engagement ring!

Maka next enlisted the help of Jillian’s family. "We had a little dinner to celebrate my birthday early as I was supposed to go offshore on Monday 6/8 (my birthday), so without her knowing... I asked her mom and aunt to have something at the house so we can be together for the weekend before I leave for work. After arriving at her aunt's place and having dinner, and celebrating my birthday with a delicious cake, we sat and relaxed as I got the nerve to do what I hope to be the best birthday gift ever." Maka then excused himself and went to the bathroom to look in the mirror and say, "YOU GOT THIS, just don't CRY!"   Upon his return, "I stood by the fireplace, and expressed my thanks for the birthday dinner and cake, I was urged on by her mom, aunt, and best friend by them yelling out, 'Speech, speech speech!'   So there I began, thanking them and her ill grandmother for being here, as I didn't have any nearby, and the connection I have is because of this lovely woman, Jillian. I called her up, told the donut story, and gave her a kiss. She thought that was all, but before she walked back to the couch, I grabbed her hand, and said, 'I'd like to make you all my family, officially.' I reached under the table hiding the box of donuts, and said ‘Since I didn't ask you to be my girlfriend with donuts,’ then got on one knee and opened the box, and said, 'I will ask you with donuts to be my wife.'" The donuts were made to say, Jill, will you marry me?

Jill’s response to Maka’s proposal was very clear. "She bit the ‘yes’ donut!," Maka joyfully explained. The happy couple are working on setting a date and determining the particulars of the wedding and we wish all the best for a long and happy life together!
