A New Iberia woman was arrested early this morning following a crash that killed a 46-year-old passenger.

Master Trooper Brooks David reported 19-year-old driver Ailayjah Derouen was arrested after the crash that occurred on La. 182 near Laperouse Road (just west of New Iberia) at approximately 2 a.m. this morning.

Investigators determined 46-year-old Tracy Chatman, of New Iberia, was killed when Derouen crossed into the westbound lane, and ran off of the left side of the road before striking several trees and overturning.

Chatman was ejected from the vehicle and sustained fatal injuries.  She was pronounced dead on scene by the Iberia Parish Coroner’s Office.

Derouen and a rear passenger, 20-year-old Kyle Derouen, of New Iberia, sustained moderate injuries and were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Derouen was treated and released into the custody of Troopers.  She was transported to the Iberia Parish jail and booked on the following charges:

  • Negligent Homicide
  • First Degree Vehicular Negligent Injuring
  • No Seat Belt, No Driver’s License
  • Careless Operation

Troopers suspect impairment to be a factor in the crash.  A toxicology sample was taken from Derouen and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

David said none of the vehicle's occupants were wearing a seat belt.

The crash remains under investigation.
