Crawfish season is here almost kind of, and this makes everything right in the world. When it comes to crawfish, do you know, or have you ever wondered about the nutritional value? Of course you haven't, and neither have I. Turns out, there's mostly good news and tee tiny bit of badish news.

The Louisiana Crawfish Promotion and Research Board has done the research and say that our beloved crawfish are an excellent source of protein and vitamins. The fat content is only about 1% of the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA). Crawfish are also pretty low in calories. Yep, they're pretty much as perfect as we all knew they were.

Nutrients in crawfish:

  • Biotin
  • Calcium
  • Iron
  • Niacin
  • Phosphorus
  • Protein
  • Selenium
  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin B-6
  • Vitamin B-12

There are roughly 327 calories in 1lb of crawfish.

So, what's the bad news? Crawfish are higher in cholesterol that other shellfish. What you toss in the pot also contributes to the cholesterol percentage. I like to throw in a stick of butter. Then, you got your sausage, corn and potatoes. All of this combined with sitting down and eating 9lbs adds up cholesterol wise, obviously. And, then you've got the dip. One cup of mayonnaise is about 1,400 calories!

All in all, crawfish are pretty much the most perfect food on earth, and nutritionally not too shabby!
