Congressman Scalise To Undergo Surgery Wednesday Related To June Shooting
Majority Whip Congressman Steve Scalise is undergoing surgery Wednesday related to injuries he sustained last June when a gunman opened fire on several legislators practicing for a charity softball game near Washington. He returned to the House floor three and a half months following the shooting which stuck several internal organs. LSU Health Level One Trauma Center’s Medical Director Dr. John Hunt says it’s common for shooting victims with serious injuries to undergo another surgery.
"It could be he has some kind of reconstructive surgery that is being planned or he some ongoing wound problem that needs to be cleaned up."
Hunt says the quick attention Scalise immediately received after the shooting more than likely saved his life.
"He got some quick prompt attention from the trauma center in Washington and certainly that's the first step to recovery from a serious injury like that."
Scalise mentioned the surgery in a press conference on Tuesday. He says he’s looking forward to getting back to work on Capitol Hill and getting business done in the session that started this week.
"I look forward to getting this done and getting back to work. I'll be in touch with my staff and hope to be back in the coming weeks working on this great agenda we're excited about."
