New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu continues his efforts to right the many wrongs of the New Orleans Police Department after Hurricane Katrina. A total of $13.3 million in settlements have been paid to the families of a man who was fatally shot by officers shortly after the storm as well as a man who was beaten to death.

17-year-old James Brissette died in the Sept. 4, 2005 shootings on the Danziger Bridge. His mother stood by Mayor Landrieu and said she "wholeheartedly" accepted Landrieu's apology for the deadly shooting by officers.

20 NOPD officers were charged with civil rights violations in the wake of the storm and deadly Danziger bridge shooting. 11 of them pleaded guilty to charges related to deadly shooting.
