Just before 7:30 last night, State troopers were called out to Highway 83 near Glenco Road after a child was struck and killed.

Troopers says 38-year-old James Hopkins III of Baldwin was driving down Highway 83, when the boy and dog ran out into the roadway.

The 5-year-old child, identified as Stephen Amador had critical injuries and was taken to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

State Police say impairtment in not suspected in the crash, and Hopkins was not cited for anything in relation to the crash.

State Police are still investigating the crash.

Trooper Brooks David says there are a few basics everyone should think about when it comes to our roadways:

Pedestrians should wear light-colored clothing or reflective clothing
Pedestrians should always avoid walking on the roadway in an area where it is dark
Pedestrians always should assume that approaching cars cannot see them, especially when it is dark
Pedestrians should always walk facing the traffic
Pedestrians should only walk in well-lit areas and/or designated areas
