Some cats that live "wild" may have already been spayed/neutered.

Of the animal rights activists that I know, most are in agreement that the best thing you can do for the pet population is to have yours spayed or neutered.

There are some feral cat project organizations around the country who make it their priority to catch feral cats (domesticated cats that have been returned to the wild, or their offspring), spay/neuter them, and then return them to the wild.

One way of knowing if a cat has been spayed or neutered is by looking for a "clip" on the ear: some organizations clip the ear; others notch the ear.  From what I understand, the clipping or notching of the ear isn't particularly painful, it heals quickly, and it prevents the same cat from being transported to the vet numerous times for spay/neutering.
