Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani took the stage together at Sunday night's (May 22) 2016 Billboard Music Awards to perform their new duet, "Go Ahead and Break My Heart." The pair was introduced by Thomas Rhett and Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz, the former of whom called the duo "a perfect match, in real life and onstage."

Shelton began the song on a darkened stage, donning jeans and a suit jacket and strumming a red acoustic guitar, before Stefani emerged from the wings in the middle of the first verse to harmonize on the chorus and sing the second verse. Throughout the track, the cameras panned from Shelton to Stefani, both of whom seemed to only have eyes for each other. At the end of the song, the two embraced in a sweet hug.

“Go Ahead and Break My Heart” is one of 15 songs on Shelton’s newest album, If I’m Honest, released on Friday (May 20). Although pairing of the country star and pop star together musically may seem like mixing oil and water, Shelton says it's anything but.

“As different as we are musically, we’re a fan of the same type of songs,” Shelton explains. “We have these playlists that we send each other that are stuff that we loved growing up, and they’re so similar, so I think it made it easy for us to collaborate.”

He adds, “The song’s important to us, and the fact that we wrote it together is so important to both of us.”

Neither Shelton nor Stefani is nominated at the 2016 BBMAs. Country acts up for trophies at this year’s awards show include Sam HuntLuke Bryan, Zac Brown Band and Chris Stapleton, among others. “Go Ahead and Break My Heart” is available for download on iTunes.
