Acadiana residents are being warned about a scam involving bogus utility bill collections. The Better Business Bureau of Acadiana has received complaints that scammers are pretending to be representatives of LUS, Slemco, Entergy, and Cleco.
KATC reports, the scammers tell customers, via phone or e-mail, that they're about to be cut off for not paying their bill. The scammer then asks the customer to pay with a pre-paid debit card. Don't do that! Credit cards have fraud protection. Pre-paid debit cards don't. Once the funds are transferred, your money is gone. If you receive an e-mail with a link, don't click it. Note the phone number on your caller ID.  If you're an LUS customer, remember, all official City of Lafayette numbers start with "291."
