Sorry, Star-Lord. Marvel’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ was just passed by ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay’ as the highest grossing film of 2014. And, making that feat all the more impressive: ‘Mockingjay’ reached that mark in just 62 days, without the help of 3D or IMAX.
Every year, when the Oscar nominations are announced, a considerable amount of time is spent debating who was snubbed. But for every film that was expecting to get nominated and didn't, there's a film that no one was expecting to get nominated and did. This is the story of those films. The movies you'll look back on and wonder exactly how the heck it ever got nominated for an Oscar.
It's almost surprising at this point that there has not been a 'Back to the Future' reboot or sequel. When you look back at the popular and successful properties of the 80s, there are few that haven't been modernized. Sony is practically falling all over themselves to get a new 'Ghostbusters' in theaters. This year alone saw new 'RoboCop,' 'Muppets,' 'Ninja Turtles,' 'Jump Street' and 'Transformers' movies. But, despite the frequency of these remakes, it doesn't look like you'll ever see a new 'Back to the Future' movie. And, that's a pretty great thing.
Both Matthew McConaughey and Christopher Nolan were surprise guests at Comic-Con 2014 this past weekend, and it wasn't just their presence that was a surprise for those in attendance. They also brought along the first look at the new 'Interstellar' trailer, which completely wowed the audience. If you weren't in San Diego to see it, don't worry, we've got you covered.
Last night, Jimmy Fallon officially ushered in a new era of 'The Tonight Show' and, besides a move to New York City, already made the show his own. Can you imagine Jay Leno ever doing The Humpty Dance in a "The Evolution of Hip-Hop Dancing"?
The past few weeks have not been kind to actor Shia LaBeouf. First he was booted from the cast of a Broadway play. Then he was busted plagiarizing his apology to the other actors. Later, it was revealed his short film, 'Howard Cantour' was actually plagiarized from a comic by author Daniel Clowes. LaBeouf apologized and - you guessed it - that was plagiarized too. He hired a skywriter to fly a smug "I am Sorry Daniel Clowes" banner over Los Angeles (Clowes lives in San Francisco) and defiantly posted the cease and desist from Clowes' lawyers online.
Whatever seems to be happening in LaBeouf's personal life that has precipitated this breakdown appears to have finally reached it's head as the actor announced that he's ready to retire.
We like Jon Hamm. We think he's underappreciated by the Emmy's and wish he had a more successful movie career. That said, we just watched this trailer for 'Million Dollar Arm,' Hamm's first lead role and we wish we had nicer things to say about it.
The boy who lived continues to live on. Two years after the last 'Harry Potter' movie hit theaters (and six years after 'Deathly Hallows' was published), author J.K. Rowling is working on a Potter prequel that would follow a young Harry as an orphan, before his time at Hogwarts.
For as much as we love 'Anchorman' and Ron Burgundy, we're very happy to be at the point where we can watch actual footage from the film instead of countless promotional spots for the various 'Anchorman 2' sponsors. Yes, the first 'Anchorman 2' clip is here and it'll get you laughing along with Ron Burgundy. Wait, did we see with Ron Burgundy? We meant you'll be laughing at Ron Burgundy.
Fans of the original 'Mr. Peabody and Sherman' shorts from 'Rocky and His Friends' probably won't find much to like in this new trailer for the DreamWorks animated film. But, then again, they're probably a good 50 years older than the target audience for the new 'Mr. Peabody and Sherman' movie.
