Planet Earth came face-to-face with an asteroid today, but experts say it was nothing to be alarmed about. They say it posed no threat to humankind or our environment.Asteroid 2011 MD passed approximately 7,600 miles above Planet Earth at about Noon (Central Time) according to experts at NASA.

The small asteroid measures only 33 feet long, according to scientists. It passed over the southern part of the Atlantic Ocean.

Similarly sized asteroids sail past Earth every six years without much fanfare. A smaller asteroid whizzed by  Earth earlier this year, coming within 3,400 miles of our planet.

Asteroid 2011 MD was said to be briefly be bright enough to be seen by medium-size telescopes. However, it was not easy  to catch a glimpse due to the fact it moves thousands of miles per hour.
