Earlier today, Iberia Parish Sheriff Louis Ackal pleaded not guilty to civil rights violations at the Lafayette Federal Courthouse.

He's facing federal conspiracy charges after it is alleged that he directed officers to assault inmates in the parish jail's chapel, where no surveillance cameras would record the 2011 beatings.

Ackal and a supervisor for the sheriff's office were indicted this month on conspiracy charges. Several former employees of his office already have pleaded guilty.

Jeremy Hatley is the latest person to plead guilty in the inmate beatings investigation involving the Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office.

According to our news partners at KATC, Jeremy Hatley was a sergeant in the K-9 Unit during the beatings, before he resigned from the office last week. He admitted in court to deprivation of rights under the color of the law and false statement. This involves watching one of the alleged inmate beatings in the Iberia Parish jail chapel, as well as watching a narcotics officer allegedly force that inmate to simulate oral sex.

Hatley makes the ninth IPSO deputy to resign over the incidents. Two other men, Iberia Parish Sheriff Louis Ackal and Lt. Col. Gerald Savoy, will be arraigned later this week on civil rights violations.
