Advice To My Son
In a texting conversation with my son today, I said a few things that I thought he might want to hear from his old dad.
I said to him:
- Have fun now, don't wait until you're my age
- Work hard to afford to play hard
- Don't do anything to hurt yourself or others and you will SHINE
- You already have love in your heart, now GIVE IT AWAY, you'll make more
- Believe in yourself, believing in yourself is the first step towards happiness
- Treat others like you want to be treated, ALWAYS, even when you don't feel like being nice
- Trust your family, until they give you reason not to
- Don't be mean to family, if you don't want to be around them, they will understand
- Don't say yes and mean no, you'll be miserable
- You're an adult, be one
- Be free
- Be kind
- Don't give expecting anything in return
- Always say thank you
- Always say yes ma'am and no ma'am...even up north
- Save every cent you can for a rainy day, there will be many
- Enjoy the rain
- Stare at a flower
- Marvel at mountains
- Grow something, water it AND yourself
- Say God bless you to a stranger
- Take a walk
- Stop and look at a tree as though you've never seen one before
- Go out to eat with friends
- Go out to eat alone
- People watch
- Go into poor areas of a city when you get down to appreciate what you have
- Look in the mirror and smile...at YOU
- Love yourself
- When you find a problem with yourself, FIX IT
- Have someone to talk to when life throws you a curve ball
- Don't rent, BUY
- Learn something new everyday
- Watch an old cartoon on a Saturday morning
- Turn music up loud
- Listen to people, even when they aren't talking
- Don't think of what you're going to say before the other person finishes, you'll miss something
- Hold a baby
- Look at old pictures
- Buy yourself something every now and then even if you can't afford it
