The 2013 "Take your Family Fishing" Tournament has been scheduled for Saturday, June 15, 2013 at  the Myette Point Boat Launch,  Levee Rd. Charenton/Baldwin, La.

My mom grew up in Cow Island, and my dad grew up in the Bosco area, so it was almost a no-brainer for them to settle in South Louisiana when they retired from the Air Force.  I've lived here since the age of 6, but have had the South Louisiana/Cajun influence since I was born.

As kids (and even into adulthood), our family would take fishing trips, whether it be to our relatives' camp in Forked Island for fresh-water fishing, or a drive to Rockefeller Refuge in Cameron Parish for salt-water fishing and crabbing; fishing has been part of our lives for as long as we can remember.

I may be 'partial', but I believe that taking a kid fishing is a great way to teach about the outdoors, wildlife preservation, and (though some may call this a stretch) as a way to 'fend for yourself'.  That is why I like the idea of a "take your family fishing" fishing tournament!!

The Acadiana Youthe Hunter Education Club is sponsoring just that: a family fishing tournament.

The following was taken (with slight editing for fit) from the Acadiana Youth Hunter Education Club's website:

We invite you to participate in the 2nd Annual Acadiana Youth Hunter Education Club's "Take your Family Fishing"  Freshwater Tournament  on June 15, 2013  at the the Myette Point boat launch in Charenton.

Last year’s tournament was a complete success.  We had over 30 local families that  spent the day with us, and, with your feedback, we do have a few improvements over last year....

  • There will be no fees for all youths 15 and under as long as they are accompanied by an adult with paid boat fees
  • We added another category for the youth division.  The youth category is for children  ages 10-15 and the “little tanglers” Category is for children ages 9 and under
  • Weigh in deadline is pushed back till 3pm  instead of 1pm
  • We are also pulling together more activities for the youth participants such as a casting contest and a volunteer face painter (so all kids can go home with a fish, even if it’s just painted on)
  • Boats will leave in an orderly manner at daylight in order of arrival

This fishing tournament is a fundraiser for local youths to participate in the NRA International Youth Hunter Education Challenge in Raton, New Mexico on  July 21, 2013.  Funds raised will help defray expenses of travel and lodging for these youngsters during the week-long competition.

If you have prior engagements on the date of our tournament and cannot participate, perhaps you can help us with donations of  products, gift certificates and/or services for a raffle or door prizes for our participants.  Our goal is to have over 200 participants ranging from toddlers through adults.   In appreciation of your door prize donation, your company’s name will be recognized at the awards ceremony.

We also have Event Sponsorships available for $250. With an Event Sponsorship,  your company’s name will appear on all awards, a sign with your company’s name will be placed at the boat launch and/or concessions area and on the event board at the registration and awards areas with special recognition at the Awards Ceremony to be noticed by hundreds of local Anglers.  Your sponsorship will help us advertise and organize this event, and will be used to purchase awards and door prizes to ensure a fun-filled event for all local families involved.
