Webster Parish Sheriff Gary Sexton says a 7-year-old boy who shot his aunt two times for not feeding him will not be charged with a crime.

He says Louisiana law states a child under the age of 10 cannot form intent, so they do not have the authority to file charges against the boy. He says the child has had some problems in the past.

“Our understanding is from our investigation, this child has had some counseling and certainly after this incident realize that he needs additional counseling, if not other things.”

Sexton says police responded to a home outside of Minden last week and found Amanda Gipson suffering from two gunshot wounds. He says Gipson claimed this was an accident but authorities do not believe that.

“The child actually retrieved the gun from a gun cabinet, went and found some bullets in another location, loaded the gun, shot her, reloaded the gun again and shot her.”

Sexton says Gipson was transported to University Health in Shreveport and is now recovering at home. He says they are very concerned with the 7-year-old’s well-being because this was not an accident.

“Hopefully these other organizations can get this child some help. I hope this can turn out to be something that is a positive outlook in the future instead of a negative outlook.”
