After three nominations, Saoirse Ronan has finally won her first Golden Globe. The 23-year-old Irish actress was previously nominated for her lead performance in Brooklyn two years ago, and for her supporting turn Atonement in 2008. She walked away empty-handed both times, but on Sunday night Ronan claimed the Best Actress in a Comedy/Musical for Lady Bird at the 2018 Golden Globes.

Though the young actress has always been astonishingly great on screen, Greta Gerwig’s solo directorial debut gave her the opportunity to really prove herself one of the biggest talents in the industry. Ronan gives a blisteringly honest and funny portrait of a high school itching for more during her senior year. Her Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson – Lady Bird is her given name, in that she gave it to herself – is the kind of relatable role that reflects a sliver of your own younger teen self, moody, naive, and hopeful.

Ronan beat out Margot Robbie for I, Tonya, Dame Judi Dench for Victoria & Abdul, Helen Mirren for The Leisure Seeker, and Emma Stone for Battle of the Sexes for the honor. Lady Bird was also nominated for Best Motion Picture Comedy/Musical, Best Supporting Actress for Laurie Metcalf, and Gerwig was nominated for Best Director and Best Screenplay.
