Travel media site Matador Network is letting people know how to act and talk like a local before you visit our great state of Louisiana. Their words and expressions to know before visiting the Bayou State are pretty spot on, but feel free to add some of your own.

The top 10 are below, but be sure to check out the whole list, and pass them along to any out of towners who are coming to visit our beautiful state!

  • Pinch the Tail and Suck the Head - It's all about the crawfish, people!
  • Pass a Good Time - Which is pretty much what we do every day here
  • Dressed - Do you want your poboy with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and mayo?
  • Laissez le Bon Temps Rouler - Let the good times roll, baby!
  • Fais Do Do - A really fun street dance
  • Throw Me Somethin', Mister! - You can't get through Mardi Gras season without screaming this out at every parade.
  • Neutral Ground - In other cities it's called a median, but in New Orleans this is the patch of grass that divides the road. A hotly debated topic during Mardi Gras, if you want to stand on the neutral ground, or the sidewalk, for the parades
  • Holy Trinity - That's onions, bell peppers, and celery - used in just about every cajun dish
  • Cher or Sha - Depending on what part of the state you're from. A term of endearment
  • Pirogue - A cajun canoe
  • Parish - It's not a county here
  • Joie de Vivre - the joy of life
  • Lagniappe - a little something extra
  • Sussy - same as lagniappe
  • Where Y’at? - how are you doing, cher
  • Who Dat! - let's people know you are a die hard Saints Fan
